Monday October 26, 2009M. Golf In Second After 36 Holes At Isleworth Invitational

Windermere, Fla.

The University of Florida jumped two spots on the leader board at the Isleworth Invitational after matching their first round score with a 292 (+4) in Monday’s second round.  Their 36-hole score of 584 (292-292, +8) currently has them in second place.

“We had another solid day today and I thought we put forth a good team effort,” head coach Buddy Alexander. “I think the past two rounds demonstrate where we are as a team. We just have to be better than our competitors from a team standpoint because we are not going to have the same one or two guys that will carry us every round. But I am excited and proud of the team to this point. This is the closest we’ve come to the lead this season. We will be in kind of a David and Goliath situation in that the No. 1 team in the country, Oklahoma State, is ahead of us. It should be an interesting day tomorrow and I look forward to learning a little bit more about this team.”

Despite carding a six-over 78 in his second round, Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) still ranks best among Gators thanks to his strong first-round showing. The senior is currently tied for ninth with a 36-hole score of 146 (68-78, +2). McKenney got off to a tough start, making bogeys in five of his first six holes. Although he managed to card three birdies on the afternoon, he could not recover and finished at six-over.

Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) had the biggest turn-around for Florida as the freshman went from finishing last among teammates in the first round, to leading the squad on Monday. After carding a six-over 78 on Sunday, Choi rallied back to shoot a three-under 69 and is currently in a tie for 15th. He got off to a good start, making birdies on his first two holes and was able to add another birdie and a bogey before entering the turn at two-under. He carded three additional birdies, including consecutive ones on 16 and 17, and also tallied two bogeys on the back nine.

Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) has had a consistent first two rounds as the senior is currently in a tie for 15th place with a 36-hole score of 147 (74-73, +3). Alexander entered the turn at two-over after making bogeys on his first and fourth holes. He came within one stroke of par with a birdie on the 10th hole before sandwiching two birdies with two bogeys on his final four holes.

Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) finished the day in a tie for 24th place after improving his score by one stroke from Sunday to shoot a 74 (+2) in his second round. Fellow redshirt junior Robbie Wight (Palm Beach, Fla.) is currently tied for 33rd with a 151 (75-76, +7).
