Thursday May 18, 2000Softball Loses 2-0 to Cal at NCAA Regionals
The fourth-seeded University of Florida softball team lost 2-0 to No. 3 Seed Cal in the first day of the NCAA Region 6 tournament at the Bulldog Diamond on the Fresno State campus Thursday afternoon.
UF’s Beth Dieter (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) struck out four batters in six innings and allowed six hits (all singles) and one earned run in the loss. Dieter is 20-15 on the year. Cal’s Jocelyn Forest gave up the game’s only walk but had seven K’s in as many innings. The Gators scattered four hits off of Forest (21-12).
"Beth gave us a good performance and was able to keep their hitters off balance, which is what we wanted her to go in there and do," Coach Larry Ray, who is making his second NCAA Regional appearance in four years, said. "Their hitters were able to get some hits that dropped where we weren’t expecting. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that."
Cal (46-22) scored its first run in the third frame off of two hits. The Bears, ranked 10th nationally, scored again in their next inning after a fielding error in right field put a runner at the hot corner. Paige Bowie’s second base hit of the game sent in run number two.
The Gators (44-29) will play the winner of the Fresno-Maryland-Baltimore County game, which starts at 10:30 p.m. Eastern. The host Bulldogs are the No. 1 seed. WRUF-AM 850 will broadcast the game live.
