Saturday May 13, 2000Softball Loses 2-1 to Arkansas in SEC Tournament
Fourth-seeded Arkansas scattered four hits in the bottom of the seventh to break a tie ball game and defeat No. 6 Seed Florida 2-1 in the third day of the Southeastern Conference Softball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the South Commons Stadium.
UF (44-28) finished the double-elimination tournament with one win. The Gators scored in their first opportunity on a double by Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge). Arkansas tied it in the fourth frame. But, the Gators couldn’t cash in on several scoring opportunities, including two bases-loaded situations, and left 10 runners on base. Arkansas also stranded 10. With three Lady’Backs’ (42-28) aboard, second baseman Erin Stokey got her first hit of the contest for the game-winning RBI with two outs left in the game.
"I thought our players played really hard," Coach Larry Ray said. "We just couldn’t get a break on those opportunities."
UF had a team, tournament-high seven hits, highlighted by freshman shortstop Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The King’s Academy). Mossadeghi set an SEC Tournament single-game record with two doubles. The Gators had three in the game.
Senior Beth Dieter (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) took the loss. Dieter (20-14) allowed 10 hits and both runs over six and a third innings. She struck out three. Arkansas’ Rachel Tally went five and a third frames before being pulled in favor of Tammy Kincaid after letting up back-to-back hits in the sixth. Tally gave up all of UF’s hits and struck out four. Kincaid fanned two in one and two-thirds innings.
The Gators, ranked 10th in the NCAA South Region, await a possible NCAA Tournament bid. The bracket will be announced Sunday, May 14 at 9:30 p.m. Arkansas meets South Carolina Saturday night at 6 p.m. for the first semifinal game.
