Florida catcher Tony Socarras (Miami, Fla.) hit a grand slam in the second
inning to provide all the necessary offense as the 25th-ranked Gators
defeated Georgia 9-1 Friday night at McKethan Stadium.
UF starter Mike Smalley (5-7) went seven innings giving up one run while
scattering seven hits with five strikeouts. Jay Belflower pitched two
scoreless innings to secure the win.
Florida improved to 36-20-1, 16-11-1 in the SEC, while Georgia dropped to
Socarras did not stick around long after his grand slam. The senior was
ejected in the bottom of the fourth inning after reaching base via a hit
Florida scored a single run in third, fourth and fifth inning, adding two
in the eighth on a single by Matt Siegel. Aaron Sobieraj and Tim Olson
each had three hits to lead the 14-hit atttack by the Gators.
Georgia scored its only run against Smalley in the fourth ona RBI-single
by Andy Neufield, who had two hits on the night.
