Friday May 8, 2009Mesic, Gators Conclude Opening Day of Seminole Twilight Invitational

Tallahassee, FL

Sophomore Florida thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo, Bosnia), competing in his first collegiate discus competition, recorded the ninth-best throw in school history Friday to highlight the Gators’ participation on the opening day of the Seminole Twilight Invitational hosted by Florida State University at its Mike Long Track.

Mesic, in his first collegiate outdoor season, recorded an NCAA regional-qualifying toss of 186-7/56.88m to finish second overall in the men’s discus on Friday. He was the top collegian in the event, finishing second only to former Gator All-American Wes Stockbarger. Stockbarger, the outdoor school record holder in the discus captured the event with a throw of 197-1/60.08m.

In total, Florida captured two events and posted three NCAA regional-qualifying marks/times on Friday.

Freshman thrower Ben Davies (Franklin, Tenn.) captured the men’s javelin with an NCAA regional-qualifying throw of 217-6/66.30m, while distance runner Michael Anderson (Williston, Fla.) won the men’s steeplechase in a time of 9:35.61.

Freshman thrower Keely Medeiros (Luziana, Brazil) finished as the runner-up in the women’s discus competition with an NCAA regional-qualifying throw of 157-9/48.00m. Fellow thrower Scott Clayman (Jacksonville, Fla.) posted a season-best toss of 162-1/49.41m in the men’s discus.

Jumper Frankie Hammond (Hollywood, Fla.), competing in his first outdoor high jump this season, was fourth in the event with a leap of 6-8.75/2.05m, which was just shy of the NCAA regional standard.
