The 13th-ranked University of Florida men's golf team placed eighth at the Southeastern Conference Championships being held at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club (par 72, 6,991 yards) Sunday. Junior Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) (pictured left) tied for 11th in the individual race.

The team fired a final round of 4-over-par 292, its lowest of the tournament, but was unable to make up the ground. Defending national champion and fifth-ranked Georgia took the title with a two-stroke advantage over No. 21 Auburn, at 12-under-par 852. The Gators finished with a three-day total 30-over-par 894.

In the individual race, Gilliam tied for 11th at 4-over-par 220 after firing a final round of 3-under-par 69. Sophomore Camilo Benedetti (Medellin, Colombia/Instituto Jorge Robledo), who is ranked 33rd in the country and won the championship last season, tied for 19th at 6-over-par 222 after carding a 76 on the final day.

Junior Ben Banks (England/King Edwards) posted a round of even-par 72 to tie for 29th at 9-over-par 225. Freshman Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla./West Nassau) shot 76 on the day to finish in a tie for 40th place at 12-over-par 228. Sophomore Taylor Walsh (Napanoch, N.Y./Ellenville) posted a 75 to tie for 46th at 14-over-par 230.

"We held off the teams behind us today," said Coach Buddy Alexander. "Hopefully we will learn from this and we will have the opportunity to redeem ourselves at NCAAs."

The Gators will be back in action May 8-9 at the Atlanta Intercollegiate, and the NCAA Regionals will be May 18-20 in Mossic, Pa.
