Sunday April 5, 2009No. 1 Softball Completes Sweep of Mississippi State
A three-run second inning was all No. 1/1 University of Florida needed to defeat Mississippi State, 3-0, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Junior Corrie Brooks (Christmas, Fla.) led the way with a home run and two walks while senior Kristina Hilberth (Dunedin, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Gators (39-3, 18-1 SEC) recorded their 22nd shutout of the season while taking down the Bulldogs (17-20, 2-13 SEC). Senior Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos , Calif.) tallied seven strikeouts in the win. The righty (23-3) did not allow a walk for the ninth time this season and allowed only three hits. Her 118 career wins now ranks 14th on the NCAA all-time victories list and she is third in SEC history.
Lindsey Dunlap (9-12) shouldered the loss for MSU, allowing three earned runs on five hits and six walks. She did not record a strikeout in the game.
Brooks broke a scoreless tie in the second with a two-out solo home run to left field. It was the seventh of the season for the third baseman. Freshman Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla.) added two more on her first career triple. Sophomore Megan Bush (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) drew a walk and Hilberth hit a bloop single just onto the left field grass to put runners on first and second. Moultrie stepped up and smoked on down the right field line, scoring Bush and Hilberth and hustling to third.
The Gators threatened again in the third. Sophomore Tiffany DeFelice (Coral Springs, Fla.) began the inning with a walk and junior Francesca Enea (Woodland Hills, Calif.) nailed a one-out double off the wall in center, moving DeFelice to third. Brooks walked to load the bases, but Dunlap got out of the jam by forcing Bush to ground to third baseman Jessie Bailey, who stepped on the bag for the final out.
Nelson retired the final nine batters to help the Gators to victory.
