Thursday March 26, 2009James Sets Hammer Throw PR at FSU Relays
Freshman Florida thrower Fidela James (Jacksonville, Fla.) turned in a personal-best performance of 150-3/45.81m in the womenís hammer throw on Thursday and the Gators battled heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the Tallahassee area on the opening day of the 30th-annual Florida State Relays at Mike Long Track.
James, who last weekend notched her first collegiate NCAA regional-qualifying mark in the womenís shot put, finished third in the hammer throw on Thursday afternoon.
Ryan Troy (Gainesville, Fla.), the only other Florida competitor in action on Thursday, currently stands in eighth place in the menís decathlon through five events with a score of 2,695.
Troy completed his first three events - the 100m, the long jump and the shot put - before thunderstorms forced competitors from the track, delaying the meet. Following a two-and-a-half hour rain delay, it was determined at approximately 5:10 p.m. EST that the meet would continue. The final two events of the decathlon - high jump and 400m - were contested along with the menís and womenís hammer competitions.
The three-day FSU Relays continue on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. EST at Mike Long Track with the final five events of the decathlon. Running events start at 12:15 p.m. EST. Complete results and a recap of Floridaís participation in the meet will be available atwww.GatorZone.com.
