The University of Florida
women’s basketball team is set to play Temple
in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, with tip-off from Gampel Pavilion set for approximately 2:51 p.m. The game
will be televised live on ESPN and ESPNU, while live streaming video is available
through ESPN360.com
The Gators
(23-7) received the No. 8 seed in the 64-team field and face ninth-seeded Temple (21-9), with the winner advancing to the second
round to play the winner of the game between No. 1-seeded Connecticut
and No. 16-seeded Vermont
on Tuesday.
Florida is making its 12th overall
appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but its first since
the 2006 season. This is the Owls sixth consecutive NCAA berth and the eighth
in program history.
“I am
excited about the match-up with Temple,” UF head
coach Amanda Butler said. “They are a strong team out
of the Atlantic-10 Conference and I’m excited about the challenge they will
pose to us. It has been a great season for us so far and we have gotten great
leadership from our players. It was truly a tremendous season of team success
that we will hopefully be able to continue.”
The Gators
sport a 9-11 all-time record in NCAA Tournament action, but have not advanced
to the second round since 2004.
UF seniors
Sha Brooks (Jackson,
Tenn.) and Marshae Dotson (Columbus,
Ohio) have been the team’s
offensive leaders this season. The pair is the only two Gators averaging a
double-figure scoring effort, headlining UF’s potent
and very balanced attack. Brooks leads the team in scoring (16.6 ppg), assists (4.73), free throws made (128) and free
throws attempted (163), while ranking second for steals (1.70) and made
3-pointers (45). In addition to 13.7 points per game, Dotson leads UF in field
goal percentage (61.4%), rebounding (7.0 pg) and
offensive rebounds (93), while logging a team-best three double-doubles.
