Saturday March 21, 2009Gators Notch Four NCAA Regional Marks at Black and Gold Challenge

Orlando, FL

Florida’s Madison McNary (Clearwater, Fla.) and Natalie Moser (Tampa, Fla.) each captured their respective events and the Gators turned in four NCAA regional-qualifying marks to highlight a successful opening day to the 2009 outdoor track and field season on Saturday at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge, contested at the UCF Track and Field Stadium.

The one-day event served as a low-key competition of four women’s teams – Bethune-Cookman, Florida, Texas and host UCF – for the purposes of providing a strong start to the outdoor campaign.

“I thought it was a good opening meet for the women,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “We had four regional qualifiers, a lot of PRs and it was kind of a good way to get the kinks out transitioning from indoors to outdoors. I think the big thing about today was that it was a relaxed setting and gave our women a good chance to compete and get the outdoor season off to a good start.”

Moser, who enters this season ranked second on the school’s all-time outdoor pole vault list, placed first in the women’s pole vault on Saturday with a leap of 13-1.50/4.00m. She led a group of five Gators who placed in the top six at the event, as sophomore Daisy Glasser (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) was second with a leap of 12-3.50/3.75m and senior Alex Black (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was third with a jump of 11-11.75. Lauren Menke (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was fourth in the event, while Claire Spurling (Jacksonville, Fla.) placed sixth. Spurling’s leap of 10-11.75/3.35m eclipsed her previous personal best of 10-6/3.20m achieved at last season’s Pepsi Florida Relays.

McNary won the women’s 100-meter dash in a time of 11.81 (+0.5) to notch her first collegiate victory. McNary also notched a regional-qualifying time in the women’s 200-meter dash, finishing second in a personal-best time of 23.96 (+1.1).

Sophomore Keely Medeiros (Luziana, Brazil) and freshman Fidela James (Jacksonville , Fla.) each notched NCAA regional-qualifying marks in the women’s shot put. Medeiros placed second in the event with a toss of 50-11.50/15.53m, while James was third with a collegiate-best throw of 48-2.50/14.69m.

James also was second in the hammer throw with a toss of 145-9/44.42m, while Medeiros was fourth in the discus with a throw of 138-1/42.08m.

Freshman Ije Iheoma (Holland, Pa.), competing in her first collegiate outdoor meet, was second in the women’s 400-meter dash in a time of 55.33 and also participated on the 4x100-meter relay that finished in a time of 45.82. The youthful 4x1 squad consisted of McNary, Iheoma, sophomore Danielle Williams (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore Daniela Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Freshman Paige Morton (Stockbridge, Ga.) was second in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:01.09.

Florida returns to action next weekend when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to participate in the two-day Florida State Relays at Mike Long Track. Complete coverage will be available at www.GatorZone.com.
