Tuesday March 10, 2009W. Golf Finishes UCF Challenge Tied For Sixth, Yadloczky in Second

Sorrento, Fla.

The University of Florida women’s golf team finished the UCF Challenge in a tie for sixth play on Tuesday, posting a 54-hole team score of 877 (+13). The Lady Gators carded a final round score of 292 (+4), to add to their previous rounds of 292 and 293.

The squad played consistently throughout and had a better finish than seven teams with higher rankings, including SEC foes Tennessee (No. 34), Alabama (No. 6) and Vanderbilt (No. 11).

“To finish in a tie for sixth among such solid competitors is great,” said head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “This finish was huge for our confidence. The squad just needs to continue to maintain their strengths and master their weaknesses. I think we need to continue to perform at this level to solidify our place near the top with the rest of those talented teams.”

Sophomore Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) came just one stroke short of the individual championship, carding a 54-hole score of 209 (66-70-73, -7), shattering her previous career mark by seven strokes (216, 2007 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge). Yadloczky led the field throughout the entire tournament, but fell short in the final three holes. Overall, the 2008 All-SEC honoree carded 12 birdies, 37 pars and 5 bogeys.

Yadloczky was even par heading into the turn after carding two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine, but tallied one bogey on the 14th hole.

“Jessica had a great performance this week,” Briles-Hinton continued. “She is getting better and better with every week that she competes and has been working very hard on her mental game, which kept her in this event all week.”

Thanks to a strong final round, UCLA’s Stephanie Kono claimed the individual crown with a final score of 208 (71-71-66, -8). Her performance lifted the Bruins to also take home the team title with a total score of 850 (282-287-281, -14).

“When a player shoots six-under in the final round, it’s hard to compete with,” said Briles-Hinton. “Stephanie won this event, Jessica did not lose it. Jess left everything out there and did everything she needed to do to be successful.”

Freshman Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) duplicated her first round score, notching a two-over 74 in the final round. The final day of competition was highlighted by a hole in one on the fourth hole. Watts carded a bogey on the 6th hole and was one-under heading into the turn. A bogey on 15 and a double bogey on her final hole secured her finish at two-over par. She finished the event in a tie for 37th place a final score of 220 (74-72-74, +4).

Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) continued to improve each round, carding an even-par 72 during her final round. The freshman finished the event in a tie for 61st place after carding a 54-hole score of 227 (79-76-72, +11). Trailing just one stroke behind Jensen was Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Ill.) who finished the event in a tie for 68th. Schachner also improved her score following each round, saving her best for last with a one-over 73 for a tournament score of 228 (78-77-73, +12).

Joining Schachner in a tie for 68th place was redshirt sophomore Lauren Uzelatz (Lakeland, Fla.).  Uzelatz carded a final score of 228 (+12), after scoring a seven-over 79 during the final round. She collected 12 pars, 5 bogeys and one double bogey in her final day of competition.

The Lady Gators return to action on March 24-25 for the BYU Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah. The BYU Classic is the final tournament before the squad closes out the regular season with the 37th annual SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational on April 6-7 at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
