Saturday March 7, 2009Gators Sweep Wisconsin in Pair of Spring Matches
Playing its first spring competition of the 2009 campaign, the University of Florida volleyball team swept Big Ten Conference member Wisconsin in a pair of matches on Saturday at the Uno Volleyball Club in Joliet, Ill. Both matches were predetermined as four-set matches regardless of the outcome of any set.
The Gators defeated the Badgers 4-0 (25-16, 25-82, 25-13, 25-23) in the morning match, while pulling off a 4-0 sweep (25-14, 27-25, 25-17, 25-17) in the afternoon contest. Each of the squad’s 12 athletes saw action in both matches on Saturday.
“There are typically two primary goals when playing a spring match,” Florida head coach Mary Wise said. “The first is to see an improvement in the areas we have worked on in practice and the second is to get through the weekend without any injuries. We accomplished both this weekend. Our point of emphasis has been point-scoring and we certainly blocked and attacked at a much higher level today, and we had no injuries.”
In the morning match, freshman Colleen Ward (Naperville, Ill.) registered a team-high 13 kills, while freshman right-side/setter Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) and redshirt freshman Kristy Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.) added 10 and nine kills, respectively. Freshman middle blocker Cassandra Anderson (Bakersfield, Calif.) registered a team-high four blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Callie Rivers (Winter Park, Fla.) added three.
In the afternoon match, sophomore right-side/middle blocker Lauren Bledsoe (Long Beach, Calif.) and Murphy each charted a team-high 11 kills, while Ward added nine and Rivers registered six put-downs. Bledsoe also had a team-high four blocks, while Murphy added three rejections.
The match provided Gator freshmen Murphy and Ward, who both are from the suburban Chicago area, their first opportunity to play a collegiate volleyball match in front of their home-city crowd.
Florida’s next spring competition is scheduled for Sunday, April 5 in Atlanta, Ga., against opponents to be determined. More information regarding that competition date will be available on www.GatorZone.com as it gets closer to that match.
