In front of a crowd of more than 300 fans, the No. 11 University of Florida men’s tennis team (7-3) defeated No. 24 Miami (4-3), 5-2, at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on Sunday.
“We had a very good match today,” said head coach Andy Jackson. “Our team is gaining confidence and that is good as we prepare for the upcoming SEC season.”
The Gators jumped out to 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, the 23rd-ranked duo of freshman Joey Burkhardt (St. Augustine, Fla.) and redshirt junior Antoine Benneteau (Boulogne-Billancourt,France) defeated Daniel Vallerdu and Carl Sunberg, 8-2, on court one. Freshman Carlos Cueto (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) and sophomore Alex Lacroix (Paris, France) clinched the doubles point in a tight 9-7 victory over Keith Crowley and David Rosenfeld. Less than one minute later, sophomores Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, Fla.) and Johnny Hamui (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) completed the sweep with a 9-7 win over David Simon and Christian Bloecker.
In less than an hour, Dadamo extended the Gators’ lead, 2-0, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Keith Crowley on court six. After a strong second set by No. 24 Cueto, the freshman defeated Bloecker on court one, 6-4, 6-1, on court one. Ten minutes later, No. 21 Lacroix clinched the match for the Gators by defeating David Rosenfeld, 6-2, 6-3, from court two.
With the victory sealed for the Gators, No. 94 Benneteau extended Florida’s lead 5-0. The redshirt junior defeated Miami’s Ignacio Taboada, 6-4, 6-2.
The Gators return to action on March 3 as they travel to Tallahassee to face No. 16 Florida State at 5 p.m. Official results can be found at www.GatorZone.com.
