Wednesday February 11, 2009W. Golf Finishes Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Tied For Eighth

Palos Verdes, Calif.

The University of Florida women’s golf team concluded their first tournament of the spring, the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, tied for eighth place. The team capped the three-day event with a 314 on Wednesday and 54-hole total score of 948 (+96).

“I am extremely proud of the team’s effort this week,” said head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “We finished in a tie for eighth with a limited lineup against very high quality teams. This tournament will go a long way in the team’s growth process now that all of our players have experience on this tough, tough course.”

Freshman Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) had the best finish of any Lady Gator at the tournament, carding a three-over 74 in her final round. Jensen finished the event in a tie for 20th with a tournament score of 233 (82-77-74, +20). She collected four birdies, eight pars, five bogeys and one double bogey.

“Evan did a phenomenal job,” Briles-Hinton continued. “She started with some freshman mistakes that we have been working on. Once she got control of her pre-shot routine, she did very well. This experience will give her something to play off of for the rest of the season.”

Although Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) added seven strokes from her previous rounds, the sophomore had the best tournament finish for the Lady Gators, ending up in a tie for 16th. Yadloczky showed her experience tackling the difficult course, finishing the event with a 19-over 232 (75-75-82).

Sophomore Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) finished the tournament in a tie for 34th place with a 236 (82-76-78, +23). Watts sandwiched a birdie between two bogeys on her first three holes, but continued to play consistently, tallying nine pars, two birdies and a bogey before finishing her final round with a double bogey.

Redshirt junior Lauren Uzelatz (Lakeland, Fla.) had her best showing of the week, finishing the tournament in a tie for 65th place. Her third-round score of nine-over 80, along with previous marks of 86 and 81, gave Uzelatz a 54-hole total score of 247 (+34). Newcomer Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) withdrew from the event during the first round due to illness.

Third-ranked Arizona State claimed the team title by an 18-stroke margin over second place Wake Forest. The Sun Devils finished the tournament with a total score of 898 (305-294-299, +46) and were led by Juliana Murcia, who took the individual crown with an impressive one-over par 214 (70-71-73).

The Lady Gators return to action as they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C. for the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate on Feb. 22-24. Please check www.GatorZone.com for live scoring and results.
