Friday January 2, 2009Football Arrives In South Florida For FedEx BCS National Championship Game

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The University of Florida football team departed Gainesville and arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on Friday afternoon to continue preparation for the FedEx BCS National Championship game. The No. 2 Gators will attempt to capture their second national championship title in three years with a win over No. 1 Oklahoma on Jan. 8 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami.

Just less than one month ago, the Gators claimed their eighth Southeastern Conference title after defeating then-top-ranked Alabama, 31-20, on Dec. 6. The Gators currently own a 12-1 record, marking the fourth time in school history that Florida has claimed 12 or more wins (1995, 1996, 2006, 2008) and a victory in Miami will mark only the second time that a Florida team has notched 13 wins in one season (2006, 13-1).

The match-up between Florida and Oklahoma marks the first time the two programs have faced each other. However, the Gators are no strangers to bowl games, as they are making their 18th-straight bowl appearance to extend the current school record. The mark is the longest active streak among SEC teams and represents the second-longest in the nation (Florida State, 26). Head coach Urban Meyer looks to win his fifth bowl game in six years.

The FedEx BCS National Championship game will air live on FOX at 8 p.m. ET.
