Saturday April 8, 2000Men's Golf in 2nd Place at U.S. Coll. Championship

LOS CABOS, Mexico

The 19th-ranked University of Florida men's golf team fired a round of 5-over-par 293 and is one-stroke off the lead after two rounds of the Compaq U.S. Collegiate Championships Saturday.

Top-ranked Georgia Tech used a round of 13-under-par 275 to come back and take the lead from the Gators, who had a 13-stroke lead after Friday's first round.

Freshman Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla./West Nassau), who had the individual lead Friday, is three-strokes off the pace after firing an even-par 72. He is tied for second at 7-under-par, behind Oklahoma State's Edward Loar who sits atop the leaderboard at 10-under-par 134. Junior Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) also carded an even-par 72 and is tied for ninth at 2-under-par 142 with sophomore Camilo Benedetti (Medellin, Colombia/Instituto Jorge Robledo) who posted a 1-over-par 73.

Junior Ben Banks (England/King Edwards) carded a 4-over-par 76 to sit in a tie for 18th at 1-under-par 143. Junior Simon Lacey (North Beach, Western Australia/Carine) shot an 8-over-par 153 and is tied for 46th.

The 54-hole event is being contested at Eldorado Golf Course, a Jack Nicklaus design, which is a par 72, 7,028-yard layout in Los Cabos, Mexico. The tournament features 12 teams, 11 which are ranked in the top 25.

Sunday's final round will be televised on tape delay on espn2 at 2 p.m. Eastern.
