Friday April 7, 2000Men's Golf Has 13-Stroke Lead in U.S. Collegiate

Gainesville, Fla.

University of Florida freshmen golfer Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla./West Nassau) fired a course record 7-under-par 65, while three other Gators turned in sub-par rounds to give UF a 13-stroke lead after the first round of the Compaq U.S. Collegiate Championships Friday.

Dickerson carded a 5-under 31 on the front nine and finished 7-under-par, a collegiate-best, to hold a two-shot lead over teammate junior Ben Banks (England/King Edwards) and Georgia's Bryant Odom who stands at 5-under-par 67.

The 19th-ranked Gators, who are the second-lowest ranked team in the 12-team field, posted a team total of 17-under-par 271 to hold a 13-stroke lead over ninth-ranked UNLV. The Gators are 16-strokes ahead of top-ranked Georgia Tech, who is tied for fifth with sixth-ranked Georgia at even-par 288.

Sophomore Camilo Benedetti (Medellin, Colombia/Instituto Jorge Robledo) posted a round of 3-under-par 69 to tie for sixth. Junior Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) fired a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for ninth. Junior Simon Lacey (North Beach, Western Australia/Carine) shot 1-over-par 73 to tie for 25th.

"We're a young team that's a little anxious, but when you look at the scores we've got some ability," said Coach Buddy Alexander. "We've gotten better as the season has progressed, but there's a long way to go and there are some great teams in this tournament."

The tournament is being contested at the par 72, 7,028-yard layout at Eldorado in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Competition will resume Saturday with 27 holes of golf, which will be televised live on ESPN from noon to 2 p.m. The final nine holes will be played Sunday.
