Friday October 24, 2008Women's Golf Finishes Day One of The Landfall Tradition in Fourth

Wilmington, N.C.

Led by two true freshmen, the University of Florida women’s golf team had a solid start to The Landfall Tradition, finishing the first round in fourth place with a 307 (+19). Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) and Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) both shot a two-over-par 74 and are tied for third.

Watts was even through her first nine holes but bogeyed on the 10th and 11th. She rallied back to collect seven consecutive pars. Jensen’s four bogeys in round one, including two in the final three holes, were the most of any Lady Gator.

“Both Andrea and Evan played well,” UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “Through tough conditions, the two of them really hung in there, stuck with it and were able to post some good rounds. Although we didn’t play as well as we could have, this team is getting better and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens tomorrow.”

The weather conditions proved to be the fiercest competitor in the tournament, hosted by UNC-Wilmington.

“The conditions were very tough,” Briles-Hinton went on to say. “The swirling winds really made the scores rise for all participants. It forced the ladies to hit certain shots at certain places and if the didn’t, they found themselves in trouble. There were some difficult holes out there.”

Sophomore Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) shot even-par through the first six holes before bogeying the final three holes of the back nine. Yadloczky rallied back to make four pars and one birdie on the back nine. Currently in 17th place, she shot a six-over 78 on day one.

Redshirt Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) finished her round on a bad note, collecting two double bogeys and one bogey on her final three holes. However, Nelson did collect seven pars and two birdies to give her a first-round score of 81 (+9) to finish in 34th.

Sophomore Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) also had a tough day on the golf course, finishing the day with an 11-over 83, good for a spot in 44th on the leaderboard.

The Lady Gators resume action in Wilmington tomorrow, teeing off at 10:42 a.m. ET. Live scoring can be found at www.GatorZone.com and www.golfstat.com.
