Wednesday April 5, 2000Softball Splits With FSU
The University of Florida softball team entered its doubleheader at Florida State Wednesday night with the series tied, and even after extra innings and late-game heroics from both teams, itís still tied. UF came back from a 6-3 loss to take Game 2 5-3 in extra frames. The series remains knotted at four games apiece as neither team has won both ends of a twinbill in the series.
UF (31-17) improved to 5-2 in extra-inning games as it scored three times in the eighth inning to win the nightcap. FSU is 30-21 overall on the year.
Lora Pinkerton (Phoenix, Ariz./Moon Valley) sparked UFís comeback bid in the second game. The senior third baseman led off the contest with a single and advanced two bases when Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The Kingís Academy) laid down a sacrifice bunt. Pinkerton scored as FSU failed to make the tag at home after catcher Emily Marino (Joliet, Ill./Joliet) put the ball in play. Marino scored for UF in the second after leading off with a double. Senior Jenn Lutsi (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) drove her in with a base hit. FSU scored once in the fourth and tied it at two apiece in the bottom of the sixth.
Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) started in the circle for UF before freshman Nicole Michael (Phoenix, Ariz./Greenway) came in relief after three and two-thirds frames. Michael (5-3) struck out four, walked one and allowed two hits on four runs through three and a third to earn the win. Landry re-entered in the eighth and recorded her second save this season. She struck out four, yielding just a run on two hits in a combined four and two-thirds innings.
Seminole second baseman Brandi Stuart hit a grand slam off of Beth Dieter (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) as FSU took Game 1. It was the first time UF lost the opener of a twinbill against FSU. The Tribe loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk with only one out on the board. Dieter allowed FSUís second run on a walk.
UF scored two in the second frame. Lutsi led off with a walk and advanced to third on junior Ashley Booneís (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) double. Zimbardi plated Lutsi with a sacrifice bunt, and Jenn Cordero (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) sent Boone in on a ground out to shortstop. Three Seminole errors provided another scoring opportunity for the Gators in the sixth. Mossadeghi reached when shortstop Natalie Bennett bobbled a catch. Jenn Brown (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore) came in to run at second and scored on an error by first baseman Becky Wallace. Stuart had the other two fielding miscues in the game, but offensively she went 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI.
Dieter (14-6) took the loss. The senior allowed eight hits, three walks and struck out four batters. Seminole Leslie Malerich improved to 18-11 on the year. She gave up three runs on three hits, walked two and struck out two.
The Gators host SEC Eastern Division foe Tennessee (16-17, 4-7 SEC) in a four game series April 7-8. The first of the two doubleheaders begins at 5 p.m. Friday. The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m.
