Tuesday October 14, 2008McKenney finishes second at Duke Individual
Durham, NC
Durham, NC
Junior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) shot a final-round 73 (+2) and finished in second place at four-over par 217 for the tournament. Junior Chappell Brown (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) finished in a four-way tie for 13th at 10-over par 223 for the tournament.
“They got off to rough start again today,” said assistant coach Steve Bradley. “Bank and Chappell played well through the middle holes, but struggled a little coming into the clubhouse. Tim ran into a couple holes on the backside that got the better of him, but he finished with a birdie and a par and finished alone in second.”
McKenney started the day in a tie for third place, and at one point he moved into sole possession of first. In the end he was beaten out by North Carolina’s Philip Chauncey, who shot a final round 69 (-2) and finished at one-over par 214 for the tournament.
Brown couldn’t keep the momentum of his one-under par second round alive as he struggled down the home stretch to a six-over par 77 in the final round. Vongvanij moved up the leaderboard for a while, sitting at one-under par through his first six holes, but struggled on the tough stretch of holes 13-18 and carded a five-over par 76 in the third round.
McKenney’s second place finish and Brown’s tie for 13th set new career bests. Brown’s score of 146 over the first 36-holes is the best two-round stretch in his collegiate career, and his second round score of one-under par 70 is also a new personal best.
The Gators will play one final tournament in the fall, the Galloway National Invitational in Atlantic City, N.J., on October 24-26.
