Sunday October 12, 2008No. 12 Florida Soccer Defeats Mississippi State 3-0

Gainesville, Fla.

The No. 12 Florida soccer team (11-2-1, 6-0 SEC) defeated Mississippi State (5-10, 0-6 SEC) 3-0 Sunday afternoon in front of a James G. Pressly Stadium crowd of 1,121.

On Florida’s Senior Day, it seemed appropriate that two member of that class combined for the Gators’ first goal of the match. In the 24th minute, Ameera Abdullah sent a deep cross across the goal. The ball deflected off a MSU defender at the far post, traveling back across the face of the goal where Megan Kerns put it in at the far post corner. It was the sixth goal for Kerns’ this season, which leads the Gators.

“It probably was one of the more special goals (of my career) because it was such a special day,” Kerns said.

The next goal started when freshman Jazmyne Avant crossed the ball into the box. Kerns sent the ball to the top of box where sophomore Nicky Kit sent a low, hard shot in at the near post. For Kit, it was her second consecutive Sunday with a score, as her first collegiate goal tied the Oct. 5 Florida at Kentucky match at 2-all.

“Megan passed it back and I just shot it with my right foot and it went it,” Kit said. “The goalkeeper almost got it, but it hit the post and went in.”

The only goal of the second half was scored on a 20-yard left side strike by junior Angela Napolitano. It was her fourth of 2008 and gives her a new collegiate-high season goals mark.

It was Senior Day and Florida’s three seniors - Abdullah, Kerns and Liz Ruberry – were honored in a pre-match ceremony. The three all had friends and family on hand to commemorate their final Gator season. A couple of the dads reached out or traveled from great distances to be with their daughters today.

As Abdullah’s family stepped out on the field, her mother, Nisa’a, put a phone up to Ameera’s ear. It was her father, Salahuddin, calling her from another continent.

“My dad is in Korea and he couldn’t be here,” Abdullah said. “He just wanted to call to say he is proud of me, to have a good game and he wishes he could be there.”

Kerns’ father, Ken, was able to see his daughter play in person for the first time this season. He is on a year-long sabbatical in Vienna, Austria, working for the International Atomic Energy Agency, a branch of the United Nations.

All of Ruberry’s family, including her three siblings, took part in the pre-match ceremony. The Ruberry family was joined by several friends that were attired in t-shirts with her name on the back.

UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh commended the leadership this senior class is showing – on and off the field.

“Right now, all three are making a big impact on the field. That is just one part of their impact for us. They’ve all been terrific leaders,” Burleigh said. “I think a huge part of the success of our season so far is their leadership. They all bring distinct personalities to our team and that is a big part of our team as well.

“They lead on the field by example. Their work ethic sets the standard for everyone else. They are also vocal leaders,” she continued. “They are not afraid to hold their teammates to high standards and they want to win. They all are extremely competitive.”

Florida outshot MSU 14-2. Meghan Berlingo and Katie Fraine each played a half in goal Sunday to share the Gators’ fourth shutout of the season.

Next up, Florida continues action versus Southeastern Conference Western Division rivals when it travels to Auburn for a match on Friday, Oct. 17. Match time is set for 8:30 p.m. (ET) at the Auburn University Soccer Complex. The match can be heard on WRUF-AM 850 or via simulcasts on Gator Radio – Cox Channel 96/946 in Gainesville and GatorZone.com with Adam Schick calling the action.
