Monday September 29, 2008Gators fall to ninth place on day two of PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational
The Florida men’s golf team fell to ninth place on day two of the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational after shooting an 13-over par 297 in the second round. Senior Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) had the best round for the Gators with an even-par 71.
Ragland moved up seven spots on the leader board into a tie for 23rd with a 36-hole total of 145 (+3). His day didn’t start off well with a double-bogey on the first hole, but he fought back with four birdies in the round and finished at even-par.
Senior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) was the next best finisher for UF on day two with a three-over par 74. His two-day total of 150 (+8) puts him in a tie for 42nd.
“We didn’t play well today,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “Toby hung in there, but I think we depend on Billy too much, and when he has an off week we struggle.”
Redshirt sophomore Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) struggled in the second round shooting an eight-over par 79 and is in a tie for 30th place with a total of 147 (+5).
Freshman Mu Hu (Shen Zhen, China) improved his first round score by three strokes with a four-over par 75 and has a two-day total of 153 (+11), good enough for a share of 55th place. Sophomore Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) shot a second round 77 (+6) and is in a tie for 42nd at eight-over par 150 for the tournament.
Florida’s tournament total of 588 (+20) puts them in ninth place, four shots behind Arizona State.
“We’ve got our backs against the wall, but we usually play well when we’re in that situation,” said Coach Alexander. “Hopefully that will be the case tomorrow and we can move up a couple of spots.”
Oklahoma State is still on top of the leader board with a two-day total of 559 (-9). The Cowboys are led by freshman Morgan Hoffman, who is the 36-hole leader at seven-under par 135.
The final round will be played on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 9:00 a.m. Live scoring can be found online at GolfStat.com.
