Sunday September 7, 2008Women's Golf Begins Season at NCAA Fall Preview

Owing Mills, Md.

The eighth-ranked University of Florida women’s golf team kicked off its 2008 fall season at the NCAA Fall Preview on Sunday at the Caves Valley Golf Course. The Lady Gators completed 36-holes on day one, landing in 13th place with a total score of 620 (312-308, +44).

“I think that today was a good starting point for our team,” UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “The team is going to move forward and work on the areas that are needed. I know that this team is better than what we shot and that we will see improvements in their games. Overall, today was a wonderful growing opportunity.”

Sophomore Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) led the squad with the team low round of two-under 70 in the last 18 holes, to bring her 36-hole score to 147 (+3) and land in a tie for 16th. After collecting three bogeys and a double bogey in the first nine holes, Yadloczky rallied back to make an eagle on the 12th hole followed by back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th. She collected 13 pars and five bogeys on the first 18 holes to finish the morning session with a five-over 77.

True freshman Evan Jensen (Bellaire, Fla.) also turned in a strong performance in her first tournament for the Orange and Blue. Jensen, landing in a tie for 23rd, finished day one with a five-over 149 (75-74). She started slow in her first round, collecting a bogey and double bogey in her first two holes, but fought back to make two birdies and an eagle on her 13th hole. Her three-over par 75 first-round score placed her in a tie for 20th heading into the second round of the day. Jensen tallied three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in the second 18 for a two-over 74.

“I am really impressed with Evan,” the 2008 SEC Coach of the Year said. “She had an amazing first day of collegiate golf. I am very happy with her performance, especially without having a practice round.”

In her collegiate debut, freshman Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) tied for 61st after day one with a total score of 161 (+17). Watts collected two birdies, ten pars, four bogeys and two double bogeys in the first round for a six-over 78 to land in a tie with teammate Nelson for 58th. She fell three spots on the leaderboard after carding an 11-over 83 in her second round of the day.

Returning letterwinner and redshirt junior Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) struggled during the first 18 holes, collecting five bogeys and two double bogeys to score a ten-over 82 to land in a tie for 59th. Nelson fell to 69th place following the second round after carding a 12-over 84 for a total score of 166 (+22) after two rounds.

Redshirt sophomore Lauren Uzelatz (Lakeland, Fla.) rounded out the Gators lineup with a two-round score of 173 (+29). Her first-round score of 92 (+20) and second-round mark of 81 (+9) landed her in 75th place heading into the final round on Monday.

Georgia led the field after day one with a total score of 579 (283-286, +3). Virginia’s Jennie Arseneault sits atop the individual leaderboard heading into the final round with a 36-hole score of six-under 138 (68-70).

The Lady Gators will conclude the NCAA Fall Preview on Monday, Sept. 8 from the Caves Valley Golf Course. The shotgun start will begin at 8 a.m. Live scoring is available at www.GatorZone.com and www.golfstat.com.
