BEIJING, China

Florida athletes competing in the sports of baseball and basketball were in action on Tuesday at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Basketball

The 2008 U.S. Women's Olympic Team (6-0) used its size and a monster 26-9 second quarter to wear down South Korea early and roll to a 104-60 quarterfinals win and a berth into the Olympic semifinals on Tuesday night at Wukesong Arena in Beijing, China.

Former Gator great DeLisha Milton-Jones scored four points and collected a pair of rebounds in 10 minutes of action for the red, white & blue.

The U.S. victory, coupled with Russia's 84-65 win over Spain in the day's late game, set the stage for a USA versus Russia (5-1) rematch of the 2006 FIBA World Championship semifinal game, a game won by Russia 75-68. The game is scheduled to be played Thursday at 8 p.m. (8 a.m. EDT on MSNBC). China (5-1) will meet Australia in the other semifinal match up at 10:15 p.m. The winners of the semifinal games will advance to Saturday's gold medal game (10:00 p.m.), while the losers will square off in the bronze medal game (7:30 p.m.).

Baseball

Dexter Fowler went 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI double, and John Gall added a solo home run as the U.S. Olympic baseball team earned a spot in the medal round with a 4-2 win over Chinese Taipei on Tuesday evening.

U.S. starting pitcher Brandon Knight worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits to pick up the win. Team USA concludes round-robin action on Wednesday evening versus Japan. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time (7 a.m. EDT) at the Wukesong Main Field. Through six games, the U.S. and Japan are tied for third place with both owning 4-2 records.

After suffering a mild concussion in the win over China, former Gator slugger Matt LaPorta was held out of the lineup and was listed as day-to-day.
