Friday July 11, 2008Incoming Freshman VB Class Rated No. 1 by PrepVolleyball.com
The incoming Florida volleyball freshman class has been named the nation’s top recruiting class in 2008, according to PrepVolleyball.com.
Florida head coach Mary Wise welcomes Cassandra Anderson (Bakersfield, Calif.), Cindy Bathelt (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Elissa Hausmann (Tampa, Fla.), Kelly Murphy (Joliet, Ill.), Betsy Smith (Atlanta) and Colleen Ward (Naperville, Ill.) to her roster for the 2008 campaign. Additionally, PrepVolleyball.com included redshirt freshman Kristy Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.), who played on the USA A2 Blue Team that claimed the bronze medal in April, in the recruiting class rankings since she was not considered part of the Gators’ 2007 class, as judged by the publication.
“Certainly the ranking of recruiting classes is not an exact science,” Wise said. “While we are thrilled with the talent in the 2008 class, they don’t award rings based on recruiting classes.”
The nation’s top-ranked recruiting classes included Texas (No. 2), Cal (No. 3), UCLA (No. 4) and Southern Cal (No. 5). Fellow Southeastern Conference teams in the rankings included Tennessee (No. 13), Kentucky (No. 17), Alabama (No. 27) and Georgia (No. 30).
Four of UF’s six incoming freshmen claimed national titles in late June, and all six were competing in either the Junior Volleyball Director’s Association Championship in Louisville, Ky., or the USA Volleyball Junior Nationals in Dallas.
Murphy and Ward, as a member of their Sports Performance club team, won the JVDA Championship on June 30. That victory capped off an impressive run for Sports Performance, which compiled an 84-0 record since the team was organized when its members were 16 years of age.
Anderson and her TCA team from California captured the 18 Open Division of the USA Volleyball Junior Nationals, while Smith and her A5 Mizuno team won the 18 National Division of the USA Volleyball Junior Nationals.
PrepVolleyball.com, in a press release announcing the 2008 recruiting class rankings, called Florida’s 2008 class “A group that is as long on championship experience as it is on talent.”
PrepVolleyball.com ranks the top 30 recruiting classes in the nation on an annual basis.
Florida opens its 2008 season on Aug. 29, when it plays host to UAB as part of the Aquafina Invitational. Opening serve in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center is set for 7 p.m.
