Saturday May 31, 2008Men's Golf Finishes NCAA Tournament in 11th, Horschel in Sixth

West Lafayette, Ind.

The University of Florida finished the 2007-08 season with an 11th place finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships on Saturday at the Kampen Course. The Gators had a final round score of 315 (+27) to give them a four-day score of 1214 (302-291-306-315) (+62). Junior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) finished sixth on the individual leaderboard with a total score of seven-over 295.

Horschel never fell below the top-10 during the four-day tournament, even leading the field after the second round. He shot a eight-over 80 on the final day of competition to give him his fourth top-10 tournament finish of the season. Although Saturday was his highest scoring round of the tournament, he managed to make five pars and four birdies on the challenging Kampen Course.

“It wasn’t very a good day all the way around. What we hoped would be a top-five finish wasn’t even a top-10 finish, so needless to say, we are disappointed,” UF head coach Buddy Alexander said. “It is a sad way to end the season, but golf is a humbling game and we were certainly humbled today.”

UCLA claimed both the team and individual titles in impressive fashion. The Bruins were at or near the top of the leaderboard after each round of the NCAA Championships and won the title with a 72-hole total 1194 (297-293-298-306) (+42). Only one stroke separated the Bruins from second place Stanford (+43) and third place Southern California (+44). UCLA’s Kevin Chappell ran away with the individual title early in the final round, scoring a four day total of 286 (69-73-68-76) (-2).

“When the University of Florida doesn’t finish in the top-10 at NCAAs or win a conference championship, I can’t look back and call the season a complete success,” the seven-time SEC Coach of the Year said. “However, some of these guys will be back next year and we will work a little bit harder and smarter to have more of a successful season next year.”

Senior Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) had the low UF round of the day, carding a four-over 76 on Saturday. Competing in his final tournament for the Orange and Blue, his total score of 308 (+20) landed him in a tie for 50th on the leaderboard. Sophomore Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) wasn’t far behind, shooting a six-over 78 to give him a total score of 307 (+19), good for a tie for 43rd.

Junior Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.) finished the tournament in 63rd, after shooting a nine-over 81 and carding a 72-hole total of 312. Strickler collected seven pars and two birdies, but struggled on the back nine, making two double bogeys and bogeying the final three holes. Senior Tyler Brown (Jacksonville, Fla.) shot a nine-over 81 in the final round. He finished in a tie for 73rd place with a four-day total of 316 (+28).
