Friday May 30, 2008Men's Golf Advances to Final Round of NCAA Tournament

West Lafayette, Ind.

The University of Florida men’s golf team advanced to the final round of the NCAA Championships by shooting a 14-over 306 on Friday. The Gators carded a three-round total of 899 (302-291-306) and are currently sitting in sixth place.

Play was suspended at 4:15 p.m. due to lightning, resumed at 4:55 p.m. and then was suspended for the day at 5:55 p.m. Because the Gators already finished their round and currently sit in sixth, they will automatically advance to the final round.

UCLA holds sole custody of the top spot heading into the final round of competition with a three-day score of 888 (+24) thanks to a strong performance by Kevin Chappell. Chappell is first on the individual leaderboard after shooting a four-under 68 to reclaim the top spot at 210 (-6).

“There is always a little disappointment when you move a few spots down from the leaderboard and a few shots back from the lead, but at the same time, there is a lot of golf course out there and I don’t think that there is an ounce of quit in these guys,” UF head coach Buddy Alexander said. “I am hopeful that tomorrow we will go out and play a good round of golf and let the chips fall where they may.”

“We need to get off to a good start tomorrow,” Alexander continued. “We are going to play in an early group off of the front nine and the front nine is the easier of the two. So if we are going to make any kind of move, we are going to have to do it right off the blocks tomorrow. But like I said, these guys don’t have any quit in them so I think they will respond and play well.”

The Orange and Blue was led by junior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) for the third consecutive day. Horschel shot a four-over 76 on Saturday after making 12 pars, one birdie and five bogeys. He is currently in fourth place.

Senior Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) joined Horschel by shooting a four-over 74 in the third round. Villegas is currently in a tie for 85th place with a three-day score of 232 (76-80-76) (+16). Senior Tyson Brown (Jacksonville, Fla.) is tied for 112th after a four-over 76 moved him up to 19-over 235 total.

Junior Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.) is in a tie for 67th at +15 (231). Strickler was challenged on his first nine holes, making three-consecutive birdies on two different occasions. However, Strickler battled back to collect seven pars and one birdie on the back nine. Rounding out the Gators was sophomore Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), who shot an eight-over 80, giving him a total score of 229 (+13), good for a tie for 62nd.

The 30-team field at the NCAA Championship will be cut to 15 teams for the final round on Saturday. Action begins at 7 a.m. ET. Live scoring updates can be found at www.golfstat.com and www.GatorZone.com.
