Friday May 16, 2008No. 6 UF Men's Golf In Tie For Eighth Place Heading Into Final Round of NCAA Central Regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio

Senior Tyler Brown (Jacksonville, Fla.) moved nearly 40 places into the individual top 20, and the sixth-ranked University of Florida men’s golf team sits in a tie for eighth place following Friday’s round at the NCAA Central Regional at the Ohio State Scarlet Course.

The fourth-seeded Gators tallied a 16-over 300 after entering the day in fourth place. Florida shares eighth place at 26-over with Louisville, who fired a 9-over 293 on Friday. No. 19 Wake Forest extended its first-round lead to 10 shots with a 3-over 287. No. 1 Alabama is in sole possession of second place at 19-over 587. 

Only four shots separate eighth place from third place, which is currently shared by Illinois and Penn State at 22-over 590. The top 10 teams following Saturday’s final round advance to the NCAA Championships. All ties will be resolved.

 

Brown entered the second round in a tie for 55th place, but his even-par 71 vaulted the senior into a tie for 18th. He registered four birdies on the day and played his back nine at 1-under.

Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway holds a one-shot lead following a 2-under 69 that put him 3-under for the tournament. First-round leader Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest shot a 1-over 72 and is at 1-under overall. Three Wake Forest players are in the top five on the leaderboard.

Sophomore Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) dropped from a tie for seventh to a tie for 29th with a 77 (+6). Alexander struggled with a double bogey on the par-3 fifth and three bogeys to no birdies in his final nine holes. He is at 6-over for the tournament.

 

Junior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) is among several players in a tie for 37th place at 7-over. Horschel had an even-par round going before suffering five straight bogeys to close his scorecard en route to a 76 (+5). The junior had gotten off to a stellar start with birdies in two of his first four holes.

 

Senior Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) also shot a 5-over 76 in his second round. Villegas, who is in a tie for 50th, is at 8-over 150 and had seven bogeys to two birdies.

 

Junior Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.) fired a 6-over 77 and sits in a tie for 81st place at 11-over. Strickler was even heading to the par-4 seventh before carding six bogeys over his next nine holes.

 

The Gators will be paired with Louisville and Oklahoma State in Saturday’s final round that gets underway on the first tee at 8:47 a.m. ET. Strickler is scheduled to be the first on the tee followed by the rest of the UF team in 10-minute intervals. Live scoring is available at www.Golfstat.com and www.Gatorzone.com.
