The University of Florida Softball team (62-2) is the No.
1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Gators will host Georgia Tech (31-29), UCF
(46-18) and USF (44-18) in Regional action in Gainesville beginning on Friday.
The No. 1
seed is the first top 10 seed for the Gators in the history of the program. Florida and Georgia Tech
will play at 6:00 p.m. Friday and UCF and USF will meet up at 3:30 p.m. in
first round games. Georgia Tech is an at-large bid from the Atlantic Coast
Conference. UCF is the automatic qualifier from Conference USA after
winning their conference tournament this weekend. USF is an at-large bid after
winning the Big East regular season title. The winners of Friday's games will
face each other on Saturday, while the losers will meet in an elimination game
Saturday. Times of the remaining games will be announced on Monday morning. The
winner of the region will face the winner of the FresnoState
region which includes No. 16 seeded Fresno State, Sacramento State, California
and San Diego State.
Florida has only faced USF this season.
The Gators won a 5-1 game over the Bulls in Tampa on February 10.
Florida
is one of eight Southeastern Conference teams to make the tournament, the most
of any conference in the nation. Four SEC teams are top 16 seeded teams,
including No. 3 Alabama, No. 9 LSU, No. 13 Tennessee and No. 15 Georgia. Alabama, LSU and Tennessee
are also hosting regionals. Additional SEC teams
making the field of 64 are Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia
and MississippiState.
This
marks the fourth consecutive season the Gators have received one of the top 16
seeds in the NCAA Tournament. The Gators also earned a No. 13 seed in 2005 and
2007 and the No. 16 seed in 2006. It is the ninth NCAA Tournament appearance
for the Gators in the 12-year history of the program, the sixth consecutive and
the fifth time the Gators will host.
