Friday May 9, 2008No. 4 UF Women's Golf Surges To Top Of Leaderboard At NCAA East Regional

ATHENS, Ga.

Four Lady Gators are among the top 15 individuals on the leaderboard as the fourth-ranked University of Florida women’s golf team surged to first place with a three-stroke lead at the NCAA East Regional on Friday at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

"We got off to a slow start, but they grinded it out," Florida head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "The conditions were more difficult today. The wind kicked up and the greens were a little harder and they dried out a bit. We just have to play one shot at a time tomorrow, stay mentally tough and add up the scores at the end."

The Lady Gators carded the low round of the day with a 7-over 295 and sit at 9-over 585 through 36 holes. Top-ranked Duke, the three-time defending NCAA champion, fell to second place following a second-round 303 (+15). The Blue Devils are three shots back of Florida at 12-over 588. South Carolina remained in third place at 18-over 594 overall.

Florida’s 7-over round was one of only two rounds under 300 all day out of the 21 teams. Four Southeastern Conference teams are in the top five, including Auburn in fourth and host Georgia in a tie for fifth. The top eight teams following Saturday’s final round advance to the NCAA Championships.

Florida, which began its second round on the No. 10 tee, took control of first place in its final nine holes. The Lady Gators played its back nine at 2-over-par, while Duke struggled at 10-over during the same stretch.

Freshmen Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) fired the low UF round of the day with an even-par 72. Meanwhile, redshirt junior Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) carded 15 pars and one birdie en route to a 1-over 73. Both are in a tie for seventh place at 1-over 145 overall.

South Carolina’s Benedicte Toumpsin shot 2-under 70 and is in first place at 6-under through 36 holes. First-round leader Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville and Amanda Blumenherst of Duke are tied for second at 3-under.

Yadloczky, who entered the day in a tie for 17th, opened her round with bogeys on two of her first three holes but then pulled to even par with birdies on holes 13 and 17. She drained nine straight pars on her back-nine scorecard and played her final 15 holes at 2-under par.

Senior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) holds sole possession of 11th place following a 3-over 75. Chudy is at 3-over 147 through 36 holes and is just four shots back of the top five. She tallied four bogeys, 13 pars and one birdie and is in solid position for her career-best finish in a regional.

Freshman Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) posted a 41 on her front nine but played her final nine holes at 1-under to post a 3-over 75. She is one of four players in a tie for 12th place at 4-over 148. Yun rolled in birdies at the par-4 fifth and the par-5 seventh.

Redshirt freshman Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Ill.) climbed 15 places to a tie for 73rd following a 4-over 76. Schachner carded an even-par back nine after recording a 41 on her front-nine scorecard.
