Saturday April 19, 2008No. 5 UF Women's Golf Takes Five-Shot Lead Into Final Round Of SEC Championship
LOUDON, Tenn. -
LOUDON, Tenn. -
Freshman Hannah
Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) climbed to second place following a 2-under 70 on
Saturday to help give the fifth-ranked University of Florida women’s golf team
a five-stroke lead heading into the final round of the 2008 Southeastern
Conference Championship at the Tennessee National Golf Club.
The Lady Gators carded a tournament-low 5-over 293 to claim sole possession of
first place after being tied with Arkansas on Friday. The Lady Razorbacks are
in second place after a 10-over 298 put them at 19-over through 36 holes. Florida is at 14-over 590 for the tournament. Georgia, the defending champion, is in third
at 22-over 598.
“We had a good round today, and we are hoping to have a great round tomorrow,”
UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “We all want to win, but in order
to do that you can’t focus on what might happen. You have to play each shot one
at a time and go from there. That is what we can control.”
The Lady Gators will take a lead into the final round of the SEC Championship
for the first time since 1995, the year of Florida’s last conference crown. Florida’s five-shot advantage matches its largest lead heading into a final round at a
neutral site this season. The lead comes against a field that features six of
the nation’s top 25 teams.
Inclement weather overnight and early Saturday morning pushed round two tee
times back two hours. Damp conditions did not affect the greens, which remained
tough on holding approach shots.
Yun’s play was exhibited beyond her years. The 15-year-old, who entered the day
in a tie for sixth place, carded three birdies and only one bogey en route to a
career-low 70. The score eclipsed her previous career-low of 71 set on two
occasions earlier this season. It was also the lowest round of anyone in the
60-player field.
“She played a really solid and steady round,” Briles-Hinton said of Yun. “She
was calm out there and patient. She hit 13 greens on the day and did a great
job of getting up-and-down well.”
Yun played her front nine at even par, tallied consecutive birdies on holes 10 and 11 and capped her remarkable day with a three at the par-4 18th. She sits at 1-under 143 for the tournament, one shot back of Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis. Lewis dropped to 2-under 142 after a second-round 73.
“I think I played really solid today,” Yun said. “I haven’t really
talked with my teammates yet (after today’s round), but I think we are all
feeling confident as a team and individually.”
Senior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) shares third place after another
even-par round of 72. Chudy counted three birdies and three bogeys and
maintained her steady round by playing her final seven holes at 1-under par.
She sits at even-par 144 through 36 holes.
Senior Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) is the third Lady Gator in the
top 20. Myers carded a 6-over 78 to fall to a tie for 16th place at 8-over 152.
Freshman Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) sits alone in 22nd place
following a 4-over 76 that put her at 10-over 154.
Redshirt junior Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) climbed 11 places to
a tie for 47th thanks to a 3-over 75. Jouven, who is at 19-over 163 overall,
rolled in birdies on holes eight and 14.
Florida seeks to complete the wire-to-wire finish when tee times get underway
at 9 a.m. ET off both the No. 1 and No. 10 tees. The Lady Gators are in the
final pairing with Arkansas and Georgia that goes off No. 1 beginning at 9:50
a.m. ET. Live final round scoring is available at www.Gatorzone.com and
