Monday March 17, 2008Jouven Takes First Round Lead As No. 5 Women's Golf Opens Betsy Rawls Invite In Second

AUSTIN, Texas

Redshirt junior Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) fired an even-par 72 to take the first round individual lead as the No. 5 University of Florida women’s golf team opened the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in second place on Monday at the University of Texas Golf Club.

The Lady Gators posted a score of 17-over 305 and sit two strokes shy of No. 22 New Mexico, who shot a 15-over 303 to climb atop the team leaderboard. UF is three shots clear of third-place Texas (308). Arkansas is in fourth following a 23-over 311.

Windy conditions with gusts close to 30 mph played havoc with scoring conditions for all 18 teams. UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said the obstacle presented a mental challenge for her players.

“I thought we let the wind mentally get to us,” Briles-Hinton said. “We are not using the wind as an excuse because if we do, we will never improve. We didn’t hit the shots we needed to hit at the right time. If you are mentally weak, it is going to affect your entire game. We talked about it and worked on it, and I feel very confident the girls will come out very strong tomorrow.”

Jouven carded her second straight round at even-par or better with the 72, and she was the only golfer in the 90-player field to post a round at even par or better. She holds a one-shot advantage on New Mexico’s Alexandra Phelps (+1). Five other players are within two shots of the lead.

Jouven got off to a terrific start with birdies in three of her first five holes. After giving a stroke back on the par-3 second hole, she rolled in back-to-back birdies on the par-4 fourth and the par-5 fifth. She finished her front nine at 1-under and turned in a steady back nine with a 37 on a bogey and eight pars.

“I just tried to make pars,” Jouven said. “I didn’t try for anything big. I’ll just do the same tomorrow and stay in the present. The conditions won’t be very good tomorrow as well, so I will try to play just like today.”

Senior Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) is just four shots back following an opening-round 76 (+4). She is one of four players tied for seventh. Myers, like Jouven, opened her round with a birdie on the par-4 first. She took three bogeys on her front nine and made the turn at 1-over after draining a birdie putt on the par-5 ninth. She closed with a 3-over 39 on the back nine.

Senior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) posted a 6-over 78 on Monday. Chudy, who is tied for 19th, managed two birdies through her first five holes but counted a double-bogey four on the par-4 seventh. She tallied four bogeys in her final nine holes to close with a 40.

Freshman Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) shot a 7-over 79 and is in a nine-way tie for 24th place. Yun carded six bogeys and a double bogey, but closed on a positive note with a birdie three at the last. Freshman Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) is tied for 43rd after opening with a 9-over 81.

Second round tee times have been pushed back 2 ½ hours due to anticipated heavy rains overnight and in the early morning hours. Florida, who is paired with New Mexico and Texas, will go off beginning at 1:30 ET. The remainder of the Gators’ tee times follow in nine-minute intervals.
