Wednesday February 13, 2008Yadloczky and Myers Push Women's Golf to Second in Palos Verdes

Palos Verdes, Calif. – Senior Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) and freshman Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.), helped the sixth-ranked Florida women’s golf team garner runner-up honors Wednesday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The second-place finish was the best in head coach Jill Briles-Hinton’s eight stops at the Palos Verdes Golf Club during her 10-year tenure.

The Lady Gators shuffled for position throughout the day on the leaderboard, closing with a flurry to finish with a 10-over par, 294. Florida finished between two top-10 California schools, No. 1 UCLA and No. 4 USC, as the Bruins claimed team honors with a three-round total of 876. Wake Forest’s Natalie Sheary took home medalist honors as Pepperdine freshman Taylore Karle bogeyed on her last hole to end a chance of a playoff.

Florida came out strong, briefly taking the lead after a one-hour fog delay on the strength of an eagle from Yadloczky on the third hole. Myers then got on a roll on the back nine, putting together a four-birdie streak on holes 14 through 17. The eagle by Yadloczky was the first of her career and set the tone for the third round.

“We had a fog delay and I scored par on my first two holes but had to go back into the clubhouse,” Yadloczky said. “I came out and hit a 3-wood off the tee to about 150 yards in the fairway and on the next shot with my iron it bounced twice and went in.”

Florida handled the back nine with precision again as all five players in the UF rotation did not have a score over bogey on the final half.

Yadloczky and Myers finished in a five-way tie for second. Yadloczky’s previous career-high finish was a sixth-place tie at the Wildcat Fall Invitational. She now has three top-10 finishes in just five events as a rookie, also placing seventh at the Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate in the fall. Myers finished second at the 2005 SEC Championship and the 2006 Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

“It was a long three, four days but we hung in there and went out strong as a team,” Yadloczky said. “We really hung there and held on. I played really well and was happy with my putting all week.”

Myers carded a team-best final round of 70 and her streak of four birdies helped her finish with red numbers at 1-under par on the day. Consistency was the key as Myers had just one double bogey in all three rounds combined. She started the day tied for eighth.

“It started with one good hole and I just kept it going,” Myers said about her streak. “I had a 25-footer that I rolled right in and the next hole I chipped it to about an inch to the cup.”

Senior Tiffany Chudy (Mirmar, Fla.) got her spring off to a strong start by tying for 21st. Freshman Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.) capped off her first career tournament by finishing tied for 23rd. Redshirt junior Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) fired back-to-back rounds of 75 after opening with an 80 on Monday. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) lowered her score for the third straight round competing as an individual.

The Lady Gators will be in pursuit of their third consecutive title when they host the 36th SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational Feb. 22-24 at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.

“We’re really excited to be in front of friends and family and we’ll be ready to play,” Myers said.
