Friday March 10, 2000Men's Hoops Falls to Auburn 78-70 at SEC Quarters
Auburn made 32 of 44 free throws while the Gators made just 12 of 18.
"I think it's very difficult to win when you foul as much as we did", said Gator coach Billy Donovan in the postgame interview room. "They deserve to win the game. They played better than we did".
The foul trouble kept the Gators from mounting the kind of run they made to beat Ole Miss by 22 points the night before. They also shot just 37 percent for the game and 27 percent in the second half.
Freshman forward Donnell Harvey (pictured left) led the Gators with 15 points while Mike Miller scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Tigers won despite shooting just 33 percent from the field. Auburn won for the first time since star forward Chris Porter was suspended for accepting money from an agent. He failed in a bid four hours before the game to regain his eligiblity.
Auburn moves on to play a semifinal game Saturday afternoon against South Carolina. The Gamecocks upset eighth ranked Tennessee 75-68 earlier in the day.
The Gators will return home and wait to see where they'll open NCAA tournament play next week when the selection committee announces the field of 64 Sunday.
