Friday March 10, 2000Softball Splits Two Games at Speedline
The Florida softball team defeated Michigan State 7-0 and lost to Chattanooga 5-4 Friday afternon, but remains in first place of its pool after the second round of the Speedline Tournament held by South Florida at Grecco Park.
Senior Beth Dieter picked up the Gators’ 10th shutout on the year against the Spartans. Emily Marino went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead UF offensively. Dieter moves to 9-1 on the year.
Chattanooga took advantage of two Florida errors in the first inning to score five runs on three hits. Florida got one back in the second and threatened to take the lead with a sixth-inning, two out rally. The Gators scored three runs but could not convert the rest of the way to win.
Renise Landry came in relief for Nicole Michael after two-thirds innings against the Lady Mocs. Landry shut down Chattanooga’s offense, only giving up two hits and striking out four through five and two-thirds innings. Michael moves to 4-3 in her freshman campaign.
The Gators can win their pool outright with a win over Boston University Saturday at noon. The winner of each pool receives a first-round bye in the championship bracket. Bracket play begins Saturday at 5 p.m.
