Senior opposite hitter Asia Kaczor led a
trio of Southern California players with double-digit kill totals on Saturday,
as the fifth-ranked Trojans punched their ticket to the national semifinals
with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-26) win over No. 3 Texas in the final of the NCAA
Gainesville Regional.
Kaczor
led all players with 17 kills on the afternoon, and she was joined in double
figures by redshirt junior outside hitter Jessica Gysin
with 15 and senior outside hitter Diane Copenhagen, who added 13. USC hit .373
as a team in the victory, marking just their second match of the year in which
they hit better than .350.
Freshman outside hitter Juliann Faucette led
UT with 16 kills on .406 hitting, while sophomore opposite hitter Ashley Engle
recorded 12, junior middle blocker Lauren Paolini had
11 and sophomore outside hitter Destinee Hooker
contributed 10.
Senior libero Alyson Jennings paced the team with 11 digs, and senior
setter Michelle Moriarty notched a double-double with 44 assists and 10 digs.
Hooker led the Longhorns with three total blocks.
USC advances to its fourth national semifinal appearance in the last
six years, where it will face the winner of the Palo Alto Regional’s
Stanford-UCLA final on Dec. 13.
