The
University of Florida
men’s golf team completed the 2007 fall schedule with a win over South Carolina to take
third place at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship, 4-1. UCLA
defeated Georgia Tech, 4-1, to take home the team trophy.
Each member of the Florida lineup had two
individual wins to help move the Gators’ overall team record at the Collegiate
Match Play event to 13-6 in five overall appearances. Florida has finished in the top-five in
four-consecutive showings at the Collegiate Match Play Championship.
“This was a nice way to
finish the fall,” head coach Buddy Alexander said. “We played pretty
well this week and its nice to come away with a third-place finish against a
quality field like this one.”
Seniors Manuel Villegas
(Medillin, Colombia)
and Tyler Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.), along with junior Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.)
and freshman Arnond “Bank” Vongvanij (Bradenton,
Fla.) each earned wins against South Carolina.
Vongvanij’s win over Mark Anderson was the only win to need all 18 holes to
decide a victor.
Junior Toby Ragland (Jacksonville , Fla.)
was the only Gator to fall short of a win Tuesday, losing to Paul Woodbury after
leading through the first 11 holes, 3 and 2.
