Sunday October 28, 2007Men's Golf Leads Coastal Carolina After Topping Duke At Collegiate Match Play Championship

The ninth-seeded University of Florida men’s golf team advanced past No. 8 Duke in the first round of the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play event, and is currently ahead of Coastal Carolina, 3-2, through the second round before play was suspended due to darkness.

Lower seeded teams pulled upsets in four of the eight first round matches Sunday at The Oconee at Reynolds Plantation.

The Gators came out strong in the morning session against Duke, winning, 4-0-1, to earn a spot against Coastal Carolina in the second round. Coastal Carolina, the lowest seeded squad in the tournament, defeated top-ranked and undefeated Charlotte to advance to the second session.

Against Duke, the Gators went undefeated, earning wins from four players and halving the fifth. Senior Manuel Villegas (Medillin, Colombia), followed by a trio of juniors; Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.), Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.), grabbed the lead over the Blue Devils within the first three holes of the round and never relinquished it. Freshman Arnond Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) split his match with Duke’s Matthew Pierce.

“Today was fun for us, we played pretty good golf today,” Florida head coach Buddy Alexander said. “Our guys were relaxed with the different format and we jumped on to the lead early in the day and didn’t let it go.”

In the second session, the Gators fell early to Coastal Carolina, down in four of the five matches. But as the afternoon carried on, Florida would steal the momentum that Coastal Carolina had been riding from its upset over Charlotte in the morning. Reserve senior Tyler Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) came in for Ragland in the second round and is currently up three holes with as many to go.

“We’ve got Billy and Manny carrying the load for us a little bit right now, so hopefully they can stay on a roll,” Alexander said. “But we’ve also had guys like Will and Tyler step in and give us a lift when we have needed them.”

Florida and Coastal Carolina will conclude the second round Monday with the third round of action following in the late morning. The winner between Florida and Coastal Carolina would face the victor of (4) UCLA and (12) Tennessee. Live scoring can be found at or via
