Friday October 12, 2007Gal Ties Career Record in Women's Golf First-Round Effort

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Two-time All-American and senior Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) tied her career-best round with a 2-under par 69 to pace the Florida women’s golf team in the first round at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Classic Friday. Gal’s performance epitomized a strong team effort with no player breaking four strokes over the par of 71.

The sixth-ranked Lady Gators posted their second-best round of the season with a 289 (+5) and have a hold of fourth place in the 17-team field. It also extended the six-round streak where UF has kept its score below 300. Florida remains within striking distance of leader Arkansas which has a four-stroke lead.

Gal found herself in the red numbers for the second time in four rounds this year, scoring five birdies in her first 18 holes. She demonstrated her long-game abilities, registering a birdie on three par fives and tallying a streak of three consecutive holes with a birdie. Gal shot a 69 for the seventh time in her storied career, her last coming in the season opener at the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship in Nashville. Gal is tied for second in the hunt for individual honors with four others.

Setting a new season-best score was senior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) who fired a 72. Chudy, who fired previous season-low score of 73 at the Wildcat Fall Invitational, is tied for 18th. It was a consistent first round for the senior who had 13 pars and two birdies.

Coming off a fifth-place showing in Lexington while tying the school record for the lowest round, senior Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) finished the day tied for 27th after ending the day with nine straight pars for a tally of 73. Myers, who leads the team in birdies with 20, finished the day with 16 pars and just two bogeys.

Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) and freshman Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) recorded a pair of 75 marks on the day. Yadloczky started out of the gates with two birdies and Jouven scored her two birdies on the front nine as well. Both are tied for 40th.
