Junior Mike Smalley pitched a no-hitter for six innings to lead Florida to
a 9-2 victory over North Carolina Greensboro Tuesday night. Florida
improved to 7-7, while UNC Greensboro dropped to 5-5 on the season.
Smalley (3-1) held the Spartans hitless through six innings, allowing just
three walks with seven strikeouts before leaving the game for reliever
Eddie Rojas. Rojas kept the no-hitter in place until two outs in the
eighth inning before Richard Hopp singled to center field to end the no-
hit bid. UNCG recorded four consecutive hits, scoring two runs before the
Rojas recorded the third out in the innning. Joey Simon pitched a perfect
ninth inning to secure the win.
Florida jumped out with two runs in the first inning off Spartan starter
Darin Pralines (1-1), adding a third run in the third inning for a 3-0
lead. UF broke open the game in the fifth inning with four runs. Kevin
Estrada singled with the bases loaded to score two runs and Aaron Davidson
followed with a another single to score Matt Goss and Estrada.
Florida added two runs in the sixth for the final margin of victory.
