Tuesday February 29, 2000Gator Baseball Defeats UNC Greensboro 9-2

Junior Mike Smalley pitched a no-hitter for six innings to lead Florida to a 9-2 victory over North Carolina Greensboro Tuesday night. Florida improved to 7-7, while UNC Greensboro dropped to 5-5 on the season.

Smalley (3-1) held the Spartans hitless through six innings, allowing just three walks with seven strikeouts before leaving the game for reliever Eddie Rojas. Rojas kept the no-hitter in place until two outs in the eighth inning before Richard Hopp singled to center field to end the no- hit bid. UNCG recorded four consecutive hits, scoring two runs before the Rojas recorded the third out in the innning. Joey Simon pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the win.

Florida jumped out with two runs in the first inning off Spartan starter Darin Pralines (1-1), adding a third run in the third inning for a 3-0 lead. UF broke open the game in the fifth inning with four runs. Kevin Estrada singled with the bases loaded to score two runs and Aaron Davidson followed with a another single to score Matt Goss and Estrada.

Florida added two runs in the sixth for the final margin of victory.

Kurt Keene and Mark Kiger each finished the game with two hits on the night.
