Tuesday February 22, 2000Men's Golf Team Wins Second Tournament

PONTE VEDRA, Fla.

The University of Florida men's golf team defended its title and captured its second straight victory at the University of North Florida Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship Tuesday. The Gators defeated UNF by five strokes while sophomore Camilo Benedetti (Medellin, Colombia/Instituto Jorge Robledo) received runner-up honors in the individual race.

The team fired a final round of 297 for a 7-over-par 871 total to take the title over four top 15 programs. Fourteenth-ranked North Florida finished five strokes behind while fourth-ranked Northwestern was third, 10-strokes off the lead. Twelevth-ranked South Carolina placed sixth while No. 13 Augusta State finished seventh. The tournament was being held at the par 72, 6,895-yard layout of Sawgrass Country Club.

Benedetti carded a 73 on the day and was tied for the individual lead after 54 holes. He lost in a playoff to David Bennett of North Florida. Freshman Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla./West Nassau) tied for five after posting a 73 on the day to finish at even-par 216 for the tournament. Sophomore Taylor Walsh (Napanoch, N.Y./Ellenville) fired a 77 to finish at 7-over-par 223 and tie for 21st place while junior Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) shot a 74 for a 8-over-par 224 total and tied for 23rd place. Junior Ben Banks (England/King Edwards) posted a 78 to finish at 17-over-par 233 and a tie for 55th.

"Our guys played a solid round of golf today," said head coach Buddy Alexander. "They played great and I am very pleased with their performance."

The is the second consecutive title for the Gators after winning their home event, the SunTrust Gator Invitational Feb. 12-13. Last year after winning their home event, the Gators went on to win their next two (the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate and the Louisiana Classics). The Gators will return to action March 10-12 at the Las Vegas Invitational.
