Thursday May 31, 200711 Gators Earn All-East Region Honors

GAINESVILLE, Fla.

The University of Florida women’s track and field program had 11 athletes in 10 events named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-East Region team as announced by the organization on Thursday.

 

Florida had eight athletes named to the USTFCCCA All-East Region team in individual events - freshman Lori Bowen (Tallahassee, Fla.) in the pole vault, freshman Evelien Dekkers (Etten-Leur, The Netherlands) in the javelin, junior All-American Lakecia Ealey (Albany, Ga.) in the 100m, freshman All-American Mariam Kevkhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) in the shot put, junior All-American Natalie Knight (Snellville, Ga.) in the 200m, junior Lorain McKenzie (Clarendon, Jamaica) in the 800m, junior Lindsay Sundell (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) in the 3,000m steeplechase and sophomore Shawneise Williams (Archer, Fla.) in the hammer throw.

 

Florida’s 4x100m of junior Abigail David (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago), Knight, Ealey and junior All-American Zan Joseph (Boynton Beach, Fla.) as well Florida’s 4x400m of junior All-American Dominique McLeggan (Weston, Fla.), Joseph, Ealey and David also earned the All-East Region honor.

 

All-East Region honors were bestowed upon those competitors finishing in the top-eight in each event at the East Regional meet, which featured nearly 500 women’s athletes from 100 colleges and universities. Bowen earned the All-East region nod by taking fourth in the pole vault after clearing a personal-best height of 3.96m/12-11.75, the fifth-best mark in school history. Dekkers captured fourth in the javelin with a mark of 48.18m/158-01 to earn the honor. Ealey received recognition in the 100m by clocking 11.49 to finish in second, just 0.07 seconds from the win. Kevkhishvili was third in the shot put with a toss of 16.31m/53-6.25. In the 200m, Knight ran the second-fastest time in school history 22.85 to advance to finals where she took second in 23.10. Sundell recorded a school-record and the second-best mark in SEC history in the 3,000m steeplechase (10:07.25) to finish fourth. In the hammer throw, Williams was eighth with a toss of 54.75m/179-7.


The Gators’ 4x100m relay crossed the finish line in 44.03, the sixth-fastest time in school history and 12th-best in the nation this season, to win the event, while the 4x400m clocked a time of 3:38.58 to finish seventh.

 

Florida will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. on June 6-9. The meet will be broadcast live on CSTV from 8:30-11:30 p.m. (ET) on June 8 and live on CBS from 1-3 p.m. (ET) on June 9. Live results can be found at www.nccasports.com.
