Alpharetta, GA
Billy Horschel moved 20 spots up the leader board with a second-round 69 on Friday.
Opening its round on the vaunted back nine of the
Golf Club of Georgia, the seventh-ranked University of Florida men’s golf team
posted a second-round 285 (-3), the second-lowest showing of the day, to move
into second at the NCAA East Regional. The Gators will open on Saturday with a
total of 575 (-1), just one stroke behind 36-hole leader Georgia.
The Gators used a collective strong finish to
propel them to their best round in relation to par since the first round of the
Puerto Rico Classic, as three UF players birdied the ninth hole.
“We’ve left ourselves with a good chance to win the
golf tournament, and that’s right where we wanted be heading into this
weekend,”
Sophomore Billy
Horschel (
“Billy’s good round was one of the more encouraging
things that I saw today, and it looked like he got back to playing the way he’s
capable of playing,” Alexander said. “Billy knows that he has to be good for us
to be good, but he’s at his best when he forgets about that and just plays
golf. That’s exactly what we saw from him this afternoon.”
Birdies on each of his last two holes allowed

Freshman Tim

Junior Manuel

“We were in good position (to win) heading into the
back nine at the SEC Championship, and we didn’t handle it particularly well,
but we certainly learned some things from that experience,” Alexander said.
“Hopefully we’ll show what we learned tomorrow and use it to our advantage as
we try to win the tournament. It’s going to take four good scores to do it, but
we got that today and I think we have a good shot to do it again tomorrow.”
