Sunday March 4, 2007Softball Falls 1-0 to Redbirds

Los Angeles, CA

The Florida Softball team (18-8) lost its final game in the Stacey Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Sunday morning, as it fell 1-0 to Illinois State.

Though the score was the same as Friday’s game with Illinois State, the Gators hit much better, with seven hits in the game, as opposed to the one hit on Friday. Florida had runners in every inning but the sixth.

Illinois State recorded the only run of the game in the bottom of the second. With one out, Jessie Buker knocked a double to left. With two outs, Casey Gorrell hit a base hit to right to score Buker for the 1-0 Redbird lead.

The Gator defense worked themselves out of a jam in the bottom of the fourth. Kelsey Warning led off the inning with a base hit to left center. Andrea Shifflet came in to pinch run for her at first. She advanced to second on a Buker sacrifice. A Stacy Birk base hit to left moved Shifflet to third with only one out. Casey Gorrell reached on a fielder’s choice as Redbird runners were doubled up at third and the Gator defense took Shifflet out. Following a walk to Shannon Nicholson, Jackie Williams lined out to senior Lauren Roussell (Cerritos, Calif.) at short to end the inning.

The Gators had their best chances to score in the first and seventh innings. Sophomore Kim Waleszonia (Fontana, Calif.) led off the game with a base hit to left. With one out, a senior Melissa Zick (Tampa, Fla.) base hit to center moved Waleszonia all the way to third. The next two batters grounded out to the Redbird short stop to end the inning with runners on second and third.

In the seventh, junior Mary Ratliff (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) knocked a base hit up the middle with one out in the inning. Following a second out, senior Lacy Howard (League City, Texas) dropped a base hit in center field. That would be it for Florida though as Illinois State took care of the final out of the game, ending in a one-run loss for the Gators.

Florida begins Southeastern Conference play next weekend as they take on No. 1 Tennessee at the Florida Softball Stadium. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 p.m., with the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
