Sunday February 4, 2007Gators Conclude Diving Portion of 2007 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships

Lexington, Ky.

The University of Florida women’s diving squad concluded the 2007 Southeastern Conference Diving Championships Sunday afternoon, where freshman Jennifer Funch (Cincinnati, Ohio) made the finals in the platform dive and collected an eighth-place finish with a score of 209.35.

“Jennifer did a great job on the platform today. Whenever you go to a meet of this caliber, your objective is to make the finals and put together two solid performances,” Florida diving coach Donnie Craine said.

During Sunday’s preliminaries, Funch recorded a seventh-place score of 228.60 en route to earning an entry into the finals. The All-SEC honoree posted a high score of 54.00 on her third of five dives in the prelims, and later claimed a high of 49.00 in the finals on her opening dive.

Sophomore Whitney Stern (Safety Harbor, Fla.) recorded a 15th-place finish in the women’s platform prelims after tallying a score of 194.40.

“Whitney was right in the hunt to make the finals, but she missed on her fourth dive and that kept her out of the afternoon competition,” Craine added.

The Gator women’s swimming squad will next head to Kentucky to compete in the swimming portion of the SEC Championships Wednesday-Saturday. Live results for all swimming events will be available at www.ukathletics.com and www.gatorzone.com.
