Lexington, KY

Sophomore Jonathan Wilcox claimed runner-up honors in the 1M dive at the SEC Championships.

Sophomore Jonathan Wilcox (Bellevue, Wash.) got off to a fast start at the Southeastern Conference Diving Championships on Friday, earning conference runner-up honors in the 1M dive. Wilcox’s score of 357.50 is the highest postseason total he has produced on the 1M board as a collegian.

The performance marks the second career All-SEC honor for Wilcox in the 1M dive, and his third all-conference nod overall. He tallied a score of 320.40 in the morning prelims to qualify for finals in the fourth position.

“Jonathan got through the morning and put a solid effort together tonight,” Florida diving coach Donnie Craine said. “His first five dives tonight were outstanding. You never know what can happen at a meet like this, so we’re excited to see what comes over the rest of the weekend.”

Senior Justin Schmidt (Falcon, Colo.) placed 11th for the Gators with a total of 289.25. Auburn’s Steven Segerlin won the league title with a final-round score of 380.50.

“Justin was steady today – as steady as he’s been all year,” Craine said. “He looked good out there, and I think he’s set himself up for a big weekend.”

In women’s diving action, sophomore Whitney Stern (Safety Harbor, Fla.) took 15th in the 3M dive for UF with a score of 235.85. Freshman Jennifer Funch (Cincinnati, Ohio) turned in a score of 227.95 in the event, good for 17th place.
