Ashley Harris turned in Florida's game-winning goal in the 106th minute as UF defeated Arkansas 1-0

Three Friday night home Southeastern Conference matches and three different Gator golden goal scorers. This time, it was a big goal from junior Ashley Harris in the 106th minute that gave the No. 15 Florida soccer team (11-4-2, 7-1-1 SEC) a 1-0 double-overtime win over Arkansas (10-5-1, 3-4-1 SEC) Friday evening in front of a James G. Pressly crowd of 1,803.

Harris made good on her only attempt of the night, an 18-yard turnaround shot that found the upper slot at the far post. Just a few plays before, Harris had a hard collision in the six-yard box with an Arkansas player. The evidence of that collision was still apparent after the match as Harris’s face was covered with grass clippings. She used those emotions churned up by the collision to help her get her third goal of the season and her first collegiate game-winner.

“I just wanted to hit it as hard as I possibly could into the back of the net.” Harris said. “I looked at the goal and then looked at the ball and I just hit it.”

UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh wasn’t surprised with Harris’ goal.

“Anybody who’s been around any of our practices knows that you don’t want to get Ashley Harris mad. That’s a bad thing to have happen,” Burleigh said. “She got pretty upset about not getting the call (on a collision in the six-yard box), and she just wanted to get after it. She made it happen. Alan (Kirkup, UF Assistant Coach) said in the period between the overtimes that someone was going to have to come up with a bit of magic, and that’s what Ashley (Harris) did.”

The Gators have played five home Friday night matches in 2006, with four extended to overtime. UF opened the season with a 1-1 2OT tie with defending NCAA champion Portland. In Friday night league play at Pressly Stadium, UF has posted three consecutive overtime wins – Georgia (2-1 OT/Sept. 29), Mississippi (1-0 OT/Oct. 13) and now Arkansas (1-0 2OT/Oct. 20). UF’s golden goal scorers this season are junior Stacy Bishop (Georgia), Ameera Abdullah (Mississippi) and Harris (Arkansas).

Both teams had chances to score in regulation. Bishop took a hard eight-yard shot in the fourth minute that was stopped by Arkansas’ Carrie Dillsaver. Freshman Angela Napolitano had her shot off a cross also stopped by Dillsaver in the 23rd minute. In the 32nd minute, Harris fought to keep the ball inbounds and her effort started a six-pass effort by the Gators, but Megan Kerns’ shot was stopped by the Lady ‘Back goalkeeper.

Arkansas also looked to score when Christina Burger got free in the 21st minute on a breakaway. Her shot to the far post was wide.

The Gators were just a fraction of step away from a goal in the second period. Harris sent a cross across the goalmouth but KeLeigh Hudson missed getting her foot on the ball by a whisker.

Florida appeared to score in the first overtime period when Abdullah’s 30-yard free kick that was flicked by Bishop went in at the far post, but the goal was nullified by an offside call.

The top four teams in the league standings all posted wins Friday evening. Florida with its 7-1-1 SEC record tops the standings with 22 points. Tennessee (4-0 win over Alabama), South Carolina (2-1 OT win over LSU) and Vanderbilt (2-0 win over Mississippi) are all tied for second with 17 points. Each of the top four teams have two league matches remaining.

Florida now heads to Baton Rouge, La., to meet LSU on Sunday, Oct. 22 for a 1 p.m. match. The Tigers (8-8-2, 3-4-2 SEC) lost 2-1 OT at South Carolina Friday evening. Sunday’s match can be seen on COX (channel 67 on Gainesville/Ocala Cox cable system) and the match can also be heard live on www.GatorZone.com.
