Friday August 18, 2006Gator Soccer: Orange Defeats Blue 4-3

Gainesville, FL

Ashley Harris and Lauren Hyde sign team posters following Friday's match.

The Orange used the last 30 minutes of the intra squad to score all of its goals to post a 4-3 win over the Blue Friday evening at the James G. Pressly Stadium.

Junior KeLeigh Hudson turned in two of her three goals Friday for the Orange. She started the Orange scoring in the 74th minute with a 10-yard shot to lower corner off the assist from sophomore Ameera Abdullah. She turned in an unassisted goal just a couple of minutes later off a 15-yard shot. Junior Stacy Bishop tied the match in the 77th minute with a short shot. Abdullah one-touched the ball into the goal from 12 yards off the cross from KeLeigh Hudson to give the Orange the final margin.

The first goal of the match started when freshman Jessica Eicken’s shot hit the cross bar and came down in the six-yard box. Sophomore Megan Kerns was there to put it in from three yards in the 18th minute.

Bishop, playing for the Blue in the second 30-minute period, set up the second goal of the match when she won the ball at midfield. She sent it ahead to freshman Ashlee Elliott who brought the ball into the box but saw KeLeigh Hudson above her. The cross to Hudson was hit for a 10-yard goal to start her scoring for the evening in the 50th minute. The Blue’s final goal also came from a Hudson as junior Shana Hudson hit a six-yard shot with just 20 seconds remaining in the second period.

“The whole scrimmage tonight was a pretty positive experience. The players showed up really well in terms of physically - no one was backing out of tackles and also mentally - I thought it was a good game in terms of completion and creative flow,” Burleigh said. “We have a lot of new players – it will be a totally different look than last season.”

Florida opens the season by playing host to defending NCAA champion and preseason No. 1 Portland on Friday, Aug. 25. Match time is set for 8 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium and admission, as it is for all Gator soccer regular-season events, is free. Stop by a local Wendy's restaurant to pick up registration coupons for the match.
