Wednesday January 12, 2000Freshmen Lead UF Men's Hoops Over LSU, 82-57
Hamilton scored 12 of his points in the first half when the Gators opened up a 43-25 lead over the Tigers. Fellow freshmen Brett Nelson (pictured left), Donnell Harvey and Matt Bonner combined for 32 points. The Gators needed a big contribution from their freshmen as starters Mike Miller and Kenyan Weaks combined to score just seven points.
Coach Billy Donovan said it was a phenomenal performance by his team. "This was probably one of the better defensive performances we have had this year", said Donovan in his post-game radio interview. "We did an outstanding job on LSU's frontcourt."
Stromile Swift, LSU's leading scorer, was held to just two points by the Gator defense, that also forced 23 turnovers. Donovan said he also liked the energy his freshmen played with Wednesday night. "That really carried us into the half and then when we subbed, they also did a very good job as well".
The 25-point win was the largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in school history. Florida's win left both schools with 13-2 records.
The Gators will host another ranked team , Tennessee on Tuesday night at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. Tip-off is set for 9:00.
