The Florida
Softball (31-12, 10-5 SEC) team completed the series sweep of No. 22
Mississippi State (30-11, 4-5 SEC) in Starkville,
Miss. on Sunday afternoon with a
2-1 win. With the win, the Gators have won five of six games against ranked
teams this week.
Senior Kristen Butler (Orlando, Fla.)
put the Gators on the board first with a solo home run to left center with one
out in the top of the third for her 12th homer of the season. Senior Lindsey Cameron (Palm
Beach Gardens, Fla.) followed with
a base hit to right and scored on a double down the left field line by junior Melissa Zick
(Tampa, Fla.)
to put Florida
up 2-0.
Florida junior pitcher Stacey
Stevens (Gainesville, Fla.) did not give up her first hit until
the sixth inning. Katie Johnson reached base on a Gator error to lead off the
bottom of the sixth. Blair Geddings walked. Both
runners moved into scoring position on a Hayle Guess
sacrifice. Nakita Boyce grabbed the only Bulldog hit
of the game to score Johnson, to reduce the Gator lead to just one run at 2-1.
Courtney Bures walked to load the bases. Freshman Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos, Calif.)
came in to relieve Stevens in the pitching circle. Nelson forced Katie Cooley
to fly out to right and Florida freshman Kim Waleszonia
(Fontana, Calif.)
gunned a strike to freshman catcher Kristina
Hilberth (Dunedin,
Fla.) for the double play to end
the inning.
Stevens
earned the win to improve her record to 13-2 on the year. She gave up only one
hit in the win and no earned runs. Nelson sat down the final four batters of
the game to earn her third save of the season. Ragan Blake took the loss for
the Bulldogs, moving her record to 16-5.
The Gators
travel to Tallahassee
on Wednesday to face their instate rival in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
before returning to Southeastern Conference play next weekend at Tennessee.
